TOPIC. The most common approaches for object identification within satellite images are based on a pixel analysis, or image segmentation techniques, using expert information or GIS. Machine learning techniques have been successfully  used when the images are enriched with GIS (Huang et al., 1997).

This thesis considers a novel approach based on convolutional neural networks, enriched with structuring methods such as ontologies and constraints generation. Convolutional neural networks have brought a spark in the learning power of neural networks in the past five years, as a deep learning method for efficient classification using a substantial volume of data (1 million of images for thousand classes) (Krizhevsky et al., 2012). Their usage for remote sensing data seems obvious, even though novel to this date. In a context of remote sensing, the images are complex because they are produced by more and more refined spatial and spectral resolutions, and obtained using many complementary sensors.


This thesis has two main objectives:

•    To generate a set-based constraint model that will allow to reduce the search space to be explored (Gervet et Van Hentenryck, 2006). The resulting model will be used to adapt the core architecture of convolutional networks in order to take into account the specific constraints relative to satellite imaging: (i) multiple resolutions (spatial, spectral and temporal), (ii) multiple types of sensors (radar, lidar, optical), (iii) radiometric noises, (iv) high heterogeneity of the observed environment, (v) handling of shadows, clouds, reliefs. A particular attention will be given to the pre-processing that can improve the recognition and the concepts of sensitivity to noise within image used and the robustness of the convergence corresponding to the learning process.

•    To better understand the results by analyzing the mathematical and statistical properties of the parameters found. To do so, ontological models using set constraints will be developed to structure and try to explain the learning process. The idea is to enter the black box of the convolutional network, by seeking to extract its structure and the connections reached, once the learning process completed.
This work will benefit from numerous data, from different projects within the research centre ESPACE- DEV (Maison de la télédétection in Montpellier), applied to different fields such as evolution of land usage and monitoring of land degradation, or the detection of the palm trees in Brazil. A result of digitalization made by human experts can be used as learning basis. Project Description
The Media Department of the Centre for Resilient Networks and Applications (CRNA) at Simula Research Laboratory has an opening for one full-time Postdoctoral Research Fellow, in the field of Computer Networking and Internet Technologies. The position is available for two years, starting from April 1st, 2016.

The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will closely interact with the CRNA teams working on low-latency networking for Internet applications, and on mobile broadband networks. The official working language in the Centre, and at Simula, is English.

This position is connected to the EU-funded research project NEAT (A New, Evolutive API and Transport Layer for the Internet), which started in March 1st, 2015. The NEAT project, coordinated by Simula, is carried out by a consortium of top industry players (Celerway, Cisco, EMC, Mozilla) and academic centres (Fachhochschule Münster, Karlstad University, University of Aberdeen, University of Oslo).

Research in the NEAT project tackles the problem of the ossification of the Internet protocol stack. The long-term goal of NEAT is to bring an architectural change to the Internet, by redesigning the way in which Internet applications interact with the network. This will be achieved by allowing network services offered to applications  such as reliability, low-delay communication or security  to be dynamically tailored on a best-effort basis, considering application demands, current network conditions, hardware capabilities or local policies; also, by supporting the integration of new network functionality in an evolutionary fashion, without applications having to be rewritten.

Responsibilities

The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will be part of a project team that works on designing, developing and testing novel transport-layer systems and mechanisms, as well as service-oriented APIs for Internet applications.The project also contributes to standardisation efforts such as the TAPS working group of the IETF. Research activities will be done in close collaboration with project partners, and will require a practical, hands-on approach to build real-world prototypes.
As a Post-doctoral fellow, the candidate is expected to collaborate with PhD students, and to supervise and collaborate with Master students. We provide the opportunity, as well as support, to apply for research funding or commercialisation funding, which could help establish follow-up projects. There are no requirements for teaching duties.

Your Profile

We are looking for outstanding candidates with:
  • A PhD degree (or very near completion of their PhD) on Computer Science or a related discipline.
  • A strong track record of scientific publications.
  • Extensive knowledge of data communication technologies. In particular, in-depth knowledge of Internet transport protocols and standards is mandatory.
  • Strong programming skills and proven experience with network programming. Kernel programming skills will be highly regarded. The main platform of development will be Linux, but knowledge of other operating systems, e.g., FreeBSD, is also beneficial.
  • The ability to both collaborate closely with others, and work independently on challenging problems.
  • Excellent communication skills in English, both written and verbal, due to the international and distributed nature of the project.

ETH Zurich’s Fluids and Mineral Deposits Group is expecting support from the Swiss National Science Foundation for two 3-year PhD positions. One of the projects will re-assess the vein and alteration sequence in several porphyry copper deposits, combined with microanalytical studies of fluid inclusions, stable isotope compositions of minerals, and quantitative numerical modeling of fluid processes and mineral precipitation in cooperation with a recently appointed postdoctoral researcher. The second project will investigate the hydrothermal history of linked porphyry-type and high-sulfidation epithermal copper ores of Bor in Serbia, to clarify the current debate about magmatic vapor transport in subvolcanic ore systems, in collaboration with local geoscientists and ETH’s volcanology group.

Essential requirement for selection is a top-quality MSc or equivalent 4-5 year degree in geological sciences and a good university background in quantitative science (maths, physics, chemistry). For both projects, a keen interest in geological field observation and careful petrographic study is essential. We expect that you want to learn combining observation with advanced analytical methods in the lab and/or acquire rigorous skills in quantitative computer modeling as part of your research project.

History or background of award

A scholarship, supported by the Marsden Fund, is available for a PhD student to work in the Evolutionary Computation Research Group, School of Engineering and Computer Science at Victoria University of Wellington (VUW), New Zealand.

The scholarship will cover tuition fees, provide a stipend for up to 3 years and support a Marsden funded project in distributed data-intensive service composition. The project will focus on developing new evolutionary computation algorithms for data-intensive service composition, selection and distribution. Research experience and knowledge in the area of web services and service composition, combinatorial optimisation, distributed database systems, and/or big data would be an advantage. The student will be supervised by Dr. Hui Ma at VUW and Prof. Sven Hartmann at Clausthal University of Technology, and work together with other people at the Evolutionary Computation Research Group.

Selection criteria


Applicants need a BSc with a first class Honours or Master’s degree in Computer Science (with a GPA of 3.5/4.0 or above), including research experience and publications in web service composition and distribution, databases, big data, evolutionary computation, and/or combinatorial optimisation. Strong programming skills (Java/C++, R, Matlab ) are required.
The applications also need to meet the English requirements to enter the PhD program in Computer Science at VUW.

The Mobile and Social Computing Laboratory (http://msclab.org/) at Dalian University of Technology, China conducts interdisciplinary, application-driven academic research in social computing and mobile computing. The Lab now has 30+ members, including 10+ PhD students (from six countries on this planet!). 

We are opening 2 PhD student positions in social computing (including e.g. computational social science, data analytics, big scholarly data, social network analysis, etc). All positions will be coupled to full Chinese Government Scholarships. Basic living allowance will be 3,500 RMB/month, plus Comprehensive Medical Insurance and Benefit. Multiple PhD Positions operating system, distributed system, and concurrency projects, USA

Multiple PhD positions for the academic year starting in Fall 2016 are available on operating system, distributed system, and concurrency projects. The OS project (popcornlinux.org) involves developing scalable OSes and hypervisors for emerging multicore architectures with heterogenous instruction sets, distributed systems, and exascale systems, and transitioning them into open-source OS/hypervisor infrastructures (e.g., Linux, Xen). The concurrency project (hyflow.org) involves developing scalable concurrency control, transactional memory, and transactional storage protocols for multicore, cluster- and geo-scale distributed systems, and transitioning them into open-source compiler/run-time and middleware infrastructures (e.g., GCC, LLVM, Infinispan). Opportunities also exist in a new project that is exploring formal methods (e.g., theorem-proving) for verifying systems software (e.g., Linux kernel). Positions require an MS in Computer Engineering, or Computer Science, or a closely related field, matching background and interests, strong programming skills in relevant languages, and strong self-initiative, while being a team player.

Position One

A postdoctoral position is available in the Popcorn Linux project that involves developing compiler, run-time, and language support for emerging heterogeneous multicore architectures, in particular those with heterogeneous instruction sets (e.g., Xeon/Xeon-Phi, ARM/x86), from node-scale to rack-scale. The project aims to develop systems software for such platforms and scales, including OS, compiler, run-time, and language support, with high performance, energy efficiency, and programmability (e.g., hardware-agnostic programming). The position involves developing techniques and mechanisms, and contributing to open-source (e.g., LLVM, GCC) and experimental projects (e.g., Popcorn Linux).

Recent computer science or computer engineering PhD graduates with background in compilers, run-times, programming languages, and virtualization are sought. Strong system building skills are necessary. The position is for two-year minimum, with strong possibilities for additional years, and have no teaching obligations.
