2 PhD student positions in Architecture and Structural Design

Chalmers Architecture has a strong profile on sustainability working with central societal challenges in the built environment with explorative and practice-based approaches. The department’s teaching and research in architecture, urbanism and design processes integrate practice-based, artistic and scientific methods to explore the broad aspects of architecture – from building technology, physical design, and spatial structures to design methods, transformation of built environments and its role in sustainable development.

The department of Architecture has around 100 employees, and is located at Chalmers campus Johanneberg. The department has around seventy teachers and researchers working with teaching and research, and around twenty doctoral students. The administration consists of around ten persons.

Information about the division

The division of Architectural theory and methodology carries out research and education in the field of theory, history and practice of architecture and planning. The division focuses on different aspects of architecture, such as materials and technology, visualization and modeling, theory and history, as well as dialogue processes and design methodology. Knowledge is developed in collaboration with both external actors and with other departments at Chalmers. Here is not least the Area of Advance Built Environment an important platform.

Architecture and Structural Design is a research field strongly related to the architectural design process. This is characterized by developing, exploring and evaluating different solutions in an iterative design process. Today the field is under rapid development and span; from analysis of complex contexts, consisting of topological, geographical, social, economic, cultural, historical, etc. information that sets the boundaries, to parametric modelling of shape, computational modelling of different physical behavior and manufacturing processes ranging from smart materials to optimized structures covering all scales of interest.

Major responsibilitiesYou are invited to apply for a PhD student position in the project "Form finding in structures". The research project includes different aspects of form finding in different scales from material design to global shape of an architectural artifact. The project focus on:

• developing interactive computational models and tools for real time simulation and form finding of structures.
• developing user interfaces of computational tools which will promote creative cooperation between architects and engineers already in the conceptual stage of the design.
• using computational tools connecting parametric design soft wares with computational engines (FEM) to pursue different types of analysis such as structural / building physics / acoustic / lighting analysis
• exploring different concepts/forms by prototyping
• evaluating the working procedure using the computational tools in a real context.

Depending on your background and interest it is possible to choose focus within the topics above. An application can be for example textile membrane structures that offer a great potential for the built environment from architectural as well as engineering point of view since they with a minimum of material can span large distances, promoting space, light and sustainability. Other applications of interest can be how different architectural forms, free forms, can be generated and realized by panelization /tessalation with supporting truss and/or frame structures or other types of loadbearing systems. The realization of form through smart materials and advanced production/construction tools are also important research issues.

Your PhD-project in Architecture and Structural Design is supported by the Chalmers foundation and will be a natural part of the activities within the Area of advance Built Environment.

Position summaryFull-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of five years.

Qualifications

To qualify as a PhD student, you must have a master's level degree corresponding to at least 300 higher education credits in a relevant field. A suitable background is a Master of Science or a Master of Architecture in Architecture and Engineering, Structural engineering with emphasis on structural mechanics and computational methods (e g FEM) or corresponding level of academic education for example in mathematics. Some years of practical experience in Architecture and or Structural engineering is welcome. The position requires verbal and written communication skills in Swedish and English. If Swedish is not your native language, you should be able to teach in Swedish after two years. Chalmers offers Swedish courses.

Since communication of research results is a central part of the work, communicative skills in English (oral as well as in writing) are vital. Furthermore, it will also be expected that you can take on responsibility, take own initiatives and work independently when needed. At the same time it is important that you are good at working in teams. This is especially vital since the current project will interact closely with adjacent disciplines and with industrial partners. Finally, you need to be able to disseminate results and knowledge within existing and new networks. This includes academia, industry and society at large.

The Computer Vision Group conducts research in the field of automatic image interpretation. The group targets both medical applications, such as the development of new and more effective methods and systems for analysis, support and diagnostics, as well as general computer vision applications including autonomously guided vehicles, image-based localization, stereo and structure-from-motion. The main research problems include mathematical theory, algorithms and machine learning for inverse problems such as reconstruction, segmentation and registration.

Information about the project
State-of-the-art systems for 3D reconstruction from 2D images are mainly based on geometric concepts and the resulting, reconstructed 3D model is a purely geometric description of the scene. In this project, we would like enhance the model with semantic information, and be able to recover both scene geometry and semantics simultaneously. The idea is that by recovering both semantics and geometry, the two different sources of information will complement and support each other in order to improve the interpretation of the scene.

The research will be focused on mathematical tools appropriate for the above challenge. We have previously worked a lot on geometric reconstruction methods and this will form the basis for the new project. Another relevant example from our current research is the development of mathematical models and optimization methods for Markov Random Fields (MRFs) in combination with Deep Learning. This will be key in order to combine geometry and semantics within a single, joint framework.

Major responsibilitiesYour major responsibilities are to pursue your own doctoral studies. Postdoctoral position in Biological physics, Sweden

Living organisms contain a variety of naturally occurring lipid-based vesicles with distinct biochemical, structural and mechanical properties that allow them to fulfill well-defined biological functions in our body. Exosomes, for example, are small vesicles secreted from cells that can be isolated from body fluids such as blood and urine. Viruses are small pathogenic particles that highjack the cell to replicate and spread. Detailed characterization of biological nanoparticles is challenging because of their small size and their intrinsically heterogeneous nature with respect to for example size and composition. Moreover, biological samples are typically relatively dilute and can often only be obtained in small volumes, thereby requiring methodologies that can be scaled down to the low microliter regime.

The focus of this postdoc project is the development and implementation of a nanofluidic device for fluorescence-based analysis of small biological particles on a single particle level. The project will involve further development of a currently existing prototype but also its implementation in the analysis of extracellular vesicle samples. More specifically, we will in this project analyze chosen samples, characterize their physico-chemical properties of existing subpopulations and quantify the particles. The overall scope is to establish the relation between the properties of the vesicles and their biofunctionality for a given biological problem related to viruses and/or exosomes.

This postdoc project will be carried out as a collaboration between Asst. Prof. Marta Bally (division of Biological Physics, dept. of applied physics) and Assoc. Prof. Fredrik Westerlund (division of Chemical Biology, dept. of Biology and Biological Engineering). The young group of M. Bally focuses on the study of biological nanoparticles (viruses and exosomes), on their interaction with cellular membranes and on the relationship between their properties and their biological function.  The group of F Westerlund works on developing new nanofluidic-based tools with applications ranging from single molecule biophysics to clinical diagnostics. The project is also carried out in collaboration with Elin Esbjörner-Winters (division of Chemical Biology, dept. of Biology and Biological Engineering. We further collaborate with a number of medical researchers from the nearby Sahlgrenska University Hospital.

Major responsibilitiesThe Post Doc will work with the development of analytical procedures to quantify vesicles and characterize their physico-chemical properties using the nanofluidic device and two-channel fluorescence observation. Further developments of the nanofluidic device design is also envisioned.

Your major responsibility as postdoc is to perform your own research in a research group. The position also includes supervising master's and/or PhD students to a certain extent. Another important aspect involves collaboration within academia and with society at large. The position is meritorious for future research duties within academia as well as industry/the public sector.

Position summaryThe position is funded by a scholarship available to non-Swedish citizens with a PhD from a non-Swedish university (received not more than two years before the starting date of the scholarship), who wish to come to Sweden and conduct postdoctoral research. The scholarship is free of tax. Health care insurance will be provided. The position is limited to a maximum of two years (1+1).

QualificationsThe successful candidate should have a PhD in biosciences, biophysics, bioengineering, analytical chemistry, or related disciplines. Expertise in micro/nanofluidics, in working with lipid assemblies, in the design of bioanalytical assays or in single particle tracking/characterization using fluorescence microscopy would be a strong asset. Some basic knowledge in Matlab is also preferred.

Application procedure

The application should be marked with Ref 20150452 and written in English. The application should be sent electronically and be attached as pdf-files, as below:
1. An application of a maximum of one A4 page containing your specific qualifications for the position2. Attested copies of education certificates, including grade reports and other documents3. Curriculum Vitae4. Letters of recommendation and name of at least 2 reference persons.
