The appointment would be for one year, with the possibility of extension to two years. The research will be focused on massive data management and machine learning, with applications ​in several domains (business analytics,​ ​​​smart cities, cybersecurity, etc.).

Postdoc position in computer systems, VU University Amsterdam

High Performance Distributed Computing Group

The High Performance Distributed Computing group has decades of experience with programming methods for parallel, distributing, and mobile computing. In the past, it produced systems like Orca, MagPIe, Satin, JavaGAT, Ibis, Cuckoo, and SWAN. The group has very strong links to application domains such as machine learning, distributed reasoning, radio astronomy signal processing, digital forensics, e-health, economy, and many others.

An important topic of current research is how to program clusters with many-core accelerators, such as Graphics Processing Units and the Xeon Phi. Another topic is programming environments for distributed mobile applications, such as distributed smartphone-based sensing and Internet-of-Things. Also, combinations of high-performance and mobile computing (e.g., parallel processing on streams of sensor data) are of great interest.


Tasks

The postdoc should do experimental research on programming environments or challenging applications in one of the areas described above. We have a unique distributed experimental testbed (DAS-5) available, consisting of 6 geographically distributed clusters, including a 68-node cluster at the VU with different types of many-cores. In addition, we have a testbed for mobile computing. The work is experimental by nature. We also expect the postdoc to help with education, for example by supervising master projects.

Requirements
Candidates must have a PhD in Computer Science (or a related area) and experience with high performance or mobile computing. The candidate must be proficient in English.

Postdoctoral Researcher to work on a project in the area of QoS Optimization in Market-Oriented Cloud Computing

We are seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher to work on a project in the area of QoS Optimization in Market-Oriented Cloud Computing. The project is in collaboration with RMIT Australia.

The research project aims to develop a novel and unique framework for a sustainable and efficient cloud service market.  It aims at providing cloud consumers with the best set of tools to outsource tasks to cloud providers that meet their own economic model for costs savings, and QoS requirements over a period of time. The project also aims at empowering cloud providers with a novel framework to advertise their services and taking advantage of the economies of scale to maximize their profit.
This research centers on the development of a novel QoS-based cloud service composition framework for both cloud end-users and cloud service providers. 

The contract is for 2 years and the candidate must be reallocated to Qatar. The position is available immediately and will remain open until filled.

Postdoc position : Process Analytics for the European Data Science Academy

The European Data Science Academy (EDSA) is a coordination and support action of the H2020-ICT-15-2014 Big data and Open Data Innovation and take-up program. The aim of the EDSA project is to contribute to capacity-building by designing and coordinating a network of European skills centers for big data analytics technologies and business development. TU/e (Eindhoven University of Technology) is one of the nine partners in this program focusing on topics such as process mining and other types of process analytics. In this context we are looking for a Postdoc until January 31st 2018, starting as soon as possible.

Data Science Centre Eindhoven (DSC/e)

The postdoc will join the Architecture of Information Systems (AIS) group at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). AIS is one of the 28 research groups of the Data Science Centre Eindhoven (DSC/e). DSC/e is TU/e’s response to the growing volume and importance of data and the need for data & process scientists (http://www.tue.nl/dsce/). DSC/e is one the largest data science initiatives in the Netherlands and therefore involved in the European Data Science Academy (EDSA). The AIS group is one of the leading groups in the exciting new field of process mining (www.processmining.org). Process mining techniques focus on process discovery (extracting process models from event logs), conformance checking (comparing normative models with the reality recorded in event logs), and extension (extending models based on event logs). The work resulted in the development of the ProM framework that is widely used in industry and serves as a platform for new process mining techniques used by research groups all over the globe. Moreover, many of the techniques developed in the context of ProM have been embedded in commercial tools. See also www.processmining.org.

European Data Science Academy (EDSA)

EDSA aims to deliver the learning tools that are crucially needed in order to educate the data scientists needed across Europe.  Comprised of a consortium of academic and industry institutions with an excellent track record in professional training in Big Data, open data, and business development; and with strong ties to a wide range of stakeholders in the global data economy, EDSA will implement a cross-platform, multilingual data science curricula which will play a major role in the development of the next generation of European data practitioners. To meet this ambitious goal, the project will constantly monitor trends and developments in the European industrial landscape and worldwide, and deliver learning resources and professional training that meets the present and future demands of data value chain actors across countries and vertical sectors. This includes demand analysis, data science curricula, training delivery and learning analytics. EDSA will provide deployable educational material for data scientists and data workers and thousands of European data professionals trained in state-of-the-art data analytics technologies and capable of (co)operating in cross-border, cross-lingual and cross-sector European data supply chains. TU/e will play an important role in the development of learning analytics based on process mining techniques. Specifically, we will monitor study behavior in detail (with careful consideration of privacy issues) and provide insights into the actual learning experience. All events captured (e.g., watching videos or making online assignments) will be stored in a “process cube”, i.e., a data warehouse holding learning-related events and having dimensions based on student attributes (age, experience, gender, nationality), deployment form, and other course characteristics. The process cube will be used to analyze differences between courses and students, e.g., create process models showing differences between students that pass and those that fail. Next to using process mining for learning analytics, the postdoc will be involved in the development of curricula and learning resources focusing on the interplay between process science and data science. Note for example the MOOC Process Mining Data Science in Action (https://www.coursera.org/course/procmin). The MOOC but also the video lectures at TU/e will be analyzed using process mining techniques.  


The postdoc will join the Architecture of Information Systems (AIS) group at Eindhoven University of Technology and focus on the interplay of process mining and data science education. The appointment will be from ‘as soon as possible’, until January 31st 2018.

Requirements

We are looking for candidates that meet the following requirements:

  •     a solid background in Computer Science or Data Science (demonstrated by Master and PhD degrees);
  •     a relevant PhD is expected (ideal candidates have a strong background in process/data mining and an interest in learning analytics);
  •     candidates from non-Dutch or non-English speaking countries should be prepared to prove their English language skills;
  •     good communicative skills in English, both in speaking and in writing;
  •     candidates are expected to realize research ideas in terms of prototype software, so software development skills are needed.

Note that we are looking for candidates that really want to make a difference and like to work on things that have a high practical relevance while having the ambition to compete at an international scientific level (i.e., present at top conferences and in top journals).

About Simula

Project Description
The Media Department of the Centre for Resilient Networks and Applications (CRNA) at Simula Research Laboratory has an opening for one full-time Postdoctoral Research Fellow, in the field of Computer Networking and Internet Technologies. The position is available for two years, starting from April 1st, 2016.

The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will closely interact with the CRNA teams working on low-latency networking for Internet applications, and on mobile broadband networks. The official working language in the Centre, and at Simula, is English.

This position is connected to the EU-funded research project NEAT (A New, Evolutive API and Transport Layer for the Internet), which started in March 1st, 2015. The NEAT project, coordinated by Simula, is carried out by a consortium of top industry players (Celerway, Cisco, EMC, Mozilla) and academic centres (Fachhochschule Münster, Karlstad University, University of Aberdeen, University of Oslo).

Research in the NEAT project tackles the problem of the ossification of the Internet protocol stack. The long-term goal of NEAT is to bring an architectural change to the Internet, by redesigning the way in which Internet applications interact with the network. This will be achieved by allowing network services offered to applications  such as reliability, low-delay communication or security  to be dynamically tailored on a best-effort basis, considering application demands, current network conditions, hardware capabilities or local policies; also, by supporting the integration of new network functionality in an evolutionary fashion, without applications having to be rewritten.

Responsibilities

The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will be part of a project team that works on designing, developing and testing novel transport-layer systems and mechanisms, as well as service-oriented APIs for Internet applications.The project also contributes to standardisation efforts such as the TAPS working group of the IETF. Research activities will be done in close collaboration with project partners, and will require a practical, hands-on approach to build real-world prototypes.
As a Post-doctoral fellow, the candidate is expected to collaborate with PhD students, and to supervise and collaborate with Master students. We provide the opportunity, as well as support, to apply for research funding or commercialisation funding, which could help establish follow-up projects. There are no requirements for teaching duties.

Your Profile

We are looking for outstanding candidates with:
  • A PhD degree (or very near completion of their PhD) on Computer Science or a related discipline.
  • A strong track record of scientific publications.
  • Extensive knowledge of data communication technologies. In particular, in-depth knowledge of Internet transport protocols and standards is mandatory.
  • Strong programming skills and proven experience with network programming. Kernel programming skills will be highly regarded. The main platform of development will be Linux, but knowledge of other operating systems, e.g., FreeBSD, is also beneficial.
  • The ability to both collaborate closely with others, and work independently on challenging problems.
  • Excellent communication skills in English, both written and verbal, due to the international and distributed nature of the project.

The Mobile and Social Computing Laboratory (http://msclab.org/) at Dalian University of Technology, China conducts interdisciplinary, application-driven academic research in social computing and mobile computing. The Lab now has 30+ members, including 10+ PhD students (from six countries on this planet!). 

We are opening 2 PhD student positions in social computing (including e.g. computational social science, data analytics, big scholarly data, social network analysis, etc). All positions will be coupled to full Chinese Government Scholarships. Basic living allowance will be 3,500 RMB/month, plus Comprehensive Medical Insurance and Benefit. The scholarships are exempt from registration fee, tuition, and fee for basic learning materials. Accommodation on campus will be provided for free. Postdoctoral position : developing compiler, run-time, and language support for emerging heterogeneous multicore architectures

Position One

A postdoctoral position is available in the Popcorn Linux project that involves developing compiler, run-time, and language support for emerging heterogeneous multicore architectures, in particular those with heterogeneous instruction sets (e.g., Xeon/Xeon-Phi, ARM/x86), from node-scale to rack-scale. The project aims to develop systems software for such platforms and scales, including OS, compiler, run-time, and language support, with high performance, energy efficiency, and programmability (e.g., hardware-agnostic programming). The position involves developing techniques and mechanisms, and contributing to open-source (e.g., LLVM, GCC) and experimental projects (e.g., Popcorn Linux).

Recent computer science or computer engineering PhD graduates with background in compilers, run-times, programming languages, and virtualization are sought. Strong system building skills are necessary. The position is for two-year minimum, with strong possibilities for additional years, and have no teaching obligations. Position Two

A postdoctoral position is available in the in the Popcorn Linux project that involves developing innovative operating system architectures for emerging multicore platforms, in particular those with heterogeneous instruction sets, from node-scale (e.g., Xeon/Xeon-Phi, ARM/x86, CPU/GPU) to rack-scale (e.g., Scale-out processors, Firebox, The Machine). The project aims to develop scalable, energy-efficient, fault-tolerant, and secure OS architectures for such platforms and scales, concomitant OS components (e.g., pager, scheduler, VFS, network stack), and contributing to open-source (e.g., Linux) and experimental projects (e.g., Popcorn Linux).

Recent computer science or computer engineering PhD graduates with background in operating systems, virtualization, dependability, and distributed systems are sought. Proven programming expertise with the Linux kernel is required. The position is for two-year minimum, with strong possibilities for additional years, and have no teaching obligations. The Department of Computing Science at Umeå University, Sweden (http://www.cs.umu.se/english/), invites applications for a postdoctoral position . The successful candidate will join the recently funded project in Umeå University on academic federated database construction and cross-database analysis for research purposes of data from distributed databases. Topics considered as particularly relevant for this position are data integration, privacy preservation, ontology based knowledge mining, and large-scale data analysis.

 REQUIREMENTS

The applicant must have a PhD degree in computer science or another subject relevant for the project. In particular, the applicant must have a background in the area of data systems, especially on heterogeneous database integration and management. The PhD degree shall not be more than three years old by the end of the application period unless there are special reasons. Good research merits and excellent publications in the area of the position are strongly meriting. Excellent communication skills in both written and spoken English are required.

Particular emphasis will be put on the degree of academic experiences, practical skills and interest in the following areas:

  • Research and practical experiences on database system is essential, especially on distributed, autonomous, heterogeneous databases integration, federated database deployment and management (e.g., query, concurrency control).
  • Experience on privacy preservation on federated databases, data mining, and relevant topics would be a plus.
  • Programming proficiency on at least one objective language and one script language (e.g., Java/Matlab/Python/Perl/C/C++)
  • Publication records on database system, database management, or relevant disciplines
  • Experience of Web service deployment and development under Windows/Linux
  • Ability and experience of applying open source software (Apache tomcat, Mysql, Lucene, Spark etc.)
  • Internal and international collaboration experience in academia/industry on database technology
  • Proficiency in English, both spoken and written, is required.

Post-Doctor in Informatics with Specialization in Software Testing, Sweden

The position is offered within the area of Informatics which at the University of Skövde is defined as the study of how information is represented, processed and communicated in artificial and natural systems, as well as how IT systems are used and developed to ensure usability for individuals, organizations or society. The positon has a specialization in Software Testing, which at the University of Skövde is part of Computer Science and entails study of basic theory and methodology for testing software. This position mainly concerns research. The research is conducted within the TOCSYC project, a distributed research environment with focus on testing of critical system properties. The research environment extends over several universities and a research institute.
As a Postdoc in the project you will be involved in research and development of effective and efficient methods to test non-functional properties such as performance efficiency and robustness, in embedded systems using model-based and mutation-based approaches. The area of research can partly be adapted to the expertise of the applicant.

Collaboration between the partners in TOCSYC is close, which means that flexibility and willingness to collaborate are paramount. As a Postdoc in the project you will connect two work packages within the distributed research environment, at University of Skövde and Mälardalen University, and thus contribute to the coupling between these nodes in the area of model-based testing and mutation-based testing.

Postdoctoral Position on Infant Brain Segmentation, Registration and Atlas Construction, IDEA Lab USA

Segmentation: The successful candidate should have a strong background on Electrical or Biomedical Engineering, or Computer Science, preferably with emphasis on image feature learning and segmentation. Experience on medical image segmentation using deformable surface, level sets, and graph cut is highly desirable. People with machine learning background on image features and shape statistics are particularly encouraged to apply. Context

This Postdoctoral position takes place within the scope of a large-scale European Project: Things2Do (call KET-ENIAC 2013-2). This project aims at building a design and development ecosystem to support the deployment of a new semiconductor technology: FDSOI. This technology allows to build computer chips with smaller transistor size and lower power consumption, enabling more powerful yet energy efficient wearable smart devices.

The French Mapping Agency (IGN) contributes to this project through two of its five research laboratory (MATIS and LOEMI labs) by developing a wearable demonstrator running on FDSOI, designed for image-based localization.

Wearable localization system like smartphones usually make use of GPS or radio signal to find a position that may not be very accurate in urban environment because of noise or signal masking. This project aims at providing an accurate positioning solution exploiting the image stream from a wearable device camera (smart glasses) matched against a precisely geolocalized large scale image database, acquired using a mobile mapping vehicle called Stereopolis and developed in the MATIS laboratory [3].

The images acquired by the wearable system can be registered by first matching visual relevant features between both data sets using a CBIR approach, and second by integrating these matches into a bundle adjustment process. The MATIS already has some experience and tools on the matching of visual landmarks (e.g. road markings and road signs) and on bundle adjustment for robust registration and reconstruction of 3D visual landmarks from multiple view imagery with sub-decimeter absolute accuracy [1] [2].



This postdoc position will focus on the CBIR part of the process. He (she) will follow previous research works aiming to create a geo localization system based on semantic analysis of an image and comparison with a geolocalized object dataset.
Starting from a preliminary approach based on the indexing of the signatures of already detected semantic objects (visual landmarks or others) within a large scale geolocalized object dataset, this postdoc will focus on:
  • the study and improvement of the descriptors which produce visual object signatures dedicated to image localization,
  • the study and structuring of the signatures to perform fast retrieval in a large dataset through the distributed computing infrastructure available in the project,
  • the management of several experiments to evaluate the proposal in realistic conditions, e.g. evaluating the impact of signature degradation (partial signature, false detections…), evaluating the relative importance of landmark categories used for pose estimation, assessment of the impact of landmark density per square kilometer in the dataset, etc.

The system will be used on a mobile and wearable image based localization system associated with a distributed computing infrastructure (“cloud”), but may also be used directly on the mobile device with a smaller dataset. With the support of a team of researchers involved in the project, this postdoc will be assisted by an engineer whose missions concern the development of visual landmark detection tools and the interaction with the distributed computing infrastructure.


About MATIS Laboratory


The MATIS laboratory of the IGN (French national mapping agency - Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Energy), is one of the leading laboratories in photogrammetric computer vision, image analysis and remote sensing applied to geospatial imagery and ground-based imagery (e.g., provided by mobile mapping systems). It is composed of 30 researchers, including 19 permanent researchers. The MATIS laboratory has been involved in 3D data collection for 3D city modeling for twenty years, and makes use of several distinct methods that have been developed during this period. Required Profile

The candidate should have a PhD degree in CBIR, computer vision or photogrammetry, with experiences and interest in image management at large scale.
  • Good knowledge of programming language (C++) is mandatory.
  • Prior knowledge and experience in the fields of pose estimation will be a plus.
  • Good spoken and written English. Knowledge of French would be useful.


Location: MATIS laboratory of the IGN, Saint­-Mandé, Paris, France (metro Saint-Mande, line 1).
Salary: around 2200 € per month (net income), according to experience. The position is a salaried employment with the right to social benefits and paid vacations.
