PhD position TU Berlin, Open Distributed Systems, Prof. Manfred Hauswirth

Salary grade: E13 TV-L Berliner Hochschulen Max. 4 years, part-time employment may be possible

Working field:

The extension of the Internet into the physical world (Internet of Things) requires a combination of many research areas like Web technologies, distributed systems, database systems, networking, sensor networks, Semantic Web, Linked Data, etc. This synergy facilitates the interconnectivity and interoperability of the Things on the Web. The goal is to enable simple access to data irrespective of their source (sensors, embedded systems, Web, Semantic Web, Linked Data, social media, e.g., Twitter, etc.), scalable management of this data using a single access abstraction, and a single data model. This will enable simple standardized ways to derive useful insights from the dynamic linked data. However, the sheer size, dynamics, and heterogeneity of the data in the IoT realm poses novel and unique challenges, which we investigate in Open Distributed Systems group at TU Berlin. Currently we are looking for a PhD researcher. A successful candidate will conduct her/his independent research in one of these areas and will play an active role in teaching and supervising of students.

Requirements:

As a successful candidate you should hold a university degree (Master, Diplom or equivalent) in computer science, applied mathematics, statistics or similar, with outstanding results.
Knowledge in several of the following areas:

- advanced distributed database systems,
- stream data management,
- machine learning,
- decision support systems,
- modeling and analysis of Big Data.
- Semantic Web,
- Linked Data and data integration.
- very good programming skills (C/C++, Java, Python).

Interest in challenging scientific problems and the motivation for independent and goal-oriented research and a good level of written and spoken English are required. German is an asset.
