The Malaysian International Scholarship (MIS) is an initiative by the Malaysian Government to attract the best brain from around the world to pursue advanced academic studies in Malaysia. This scholarship aims to support Malaysian Government's effort to attract, motivate and retain talented human capital from abroad.

This scholarship aims to support Malaysian Government's effort to attract, motivate and retain talented human capital from abroad.

Talented international students with excellent academic records and outstanding co-curricular backgrounds are welcomed to apply for this scholarship and further their studies in any selected and well-established Malaysian public and private universities.

This scholarship is divided into two (2) categories of study: Postgraduate and Post-doctoral Studies.

Eligibility

To be eligible for Malaysia International Scholarship (MIS), applicants must fit the following criteria:-

1. Not be more than 40 years (Postgraduate) and 45 years (Post-doctoral) of age during application.
2. Obtained a minimum of Second Class Upper (Honours) or a CGPA of 3.5/4.0 at Bachelor Degree Level for Masters Degree applicants and for PhD candidates must possess CGPA 3.5/4.0 or very good result at Masters degree level in a similar field of intended PhD study. In addition, for post-doctoral programme, the selection will be evaluated based on the number of books produced, refereed/non refereed journals, portfolio and patent copyright. The Post-Doctoral candidate must have excellent reputation in research and possesses knowledge related to the research to be carried out.
3. Took one of the following English Language Proficiency Test not more than two years before the date of application. The list of tests and minimum scores required:
   1. IELTS Academic Test with a score of at least 6.5; or
   2. TOEFL paper-based test with a score of at least 580 or computer-based test with a score of at least 230 or internet-based test with a score at least 92.
4. In excellent health condition and certified by a Certified Doctor/Medical Professional. The cost of medical examination is to be borne by the applicants.
5. Wrote a proposal that is relevant to the field of studies.
6. Has applied for and gained admission to postgraduate and post-doctoral studies in Malaysia (conditional letters of offer will be accepted at the time of application or has a confirmation of acceptance or affiliation with the Universities in Malaysia).

Selection

Applications will be considered according to the following selection criteria:-

1. High-level academic achievement
2. The quality of the research proposal and its potential contribution towards advancement of technology and human well-being.
3. Excellent communication, writing and reading skills in English Language

Conditions

1. Scholarship holder must undertake full-time studies for postgraduate and post-doctoral studies at a campus of Malaysian Universities.It is the responsibility of the scholarship holders to confirm admission to the university.
2. Scholarship holders must not change their programme during tenure of the scholarship except with written permission from their university and the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia.
3. Scholarship holders must follow the approved programmes and abide by the university’s rules, regulations and codes of conduct.
4. Any suspension from the university will result in immediate suspension of award. Monthly allowances are not payable during suspension, including suspension due to illness.
5. It is the responsibility of successful candidates to apply for and meet the requirements for the issuing of an appropriate entry visa including medical examination. The offer of the scholarship does not guarantee the granting of a visa.
6. Scholarship holders must maintain satisfactory progress and good standing as stipulated by their host university and degree programme, or the scholarship will be withdrawn.
7. The scholarships are tenable in Malaysian universities and research must be carried out in Malaysia.
8. Scholarship holders are not allowed to take any paid employment during their tenure unless with written approval from the host university.

Swinburne Sarawak, the only international branch campus of Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne, Australia, offers its staff members an attractive remuneration package.

Interested applicants are invited to apply for the position of Postdoctoral Researcher to work on a research project entitled "Human Capital Development and Rural Informatics".

The candidate is required to independently undertake research at the highest level to develop methodology of measuring human capital development.

The main aim of the project is to evaluate the human capital development based on given rural informatics activities and training. The ability to provide in-depth understanding and in-sights into the human capital development in the rural community in relation to the pre-defined activities, training, and infrastructure will develop novel evaluation criteria of rural human capital development, specifically for Sarawak.

The requirements: 

• A PhD in the field of Human Resource Development and/or socio-economy from a reputable university. Candidates with PhD in related area of research are encouraged to apply. 
• A good Bachelor’s Degree in Social Science or Human Resource 
• A strong and keen interest in rural research. 
• A demonstrated track record of publishing in reputable journals. 
• Ability to work closely and co-ordinate meetings with stakeholders.

PhD Scholarship Predictive Model for Oil Drilling, Swinburne University of Technology (Sarawak, Malaysia Campus)

Project: Predictive Model for Oil Drilling 

Swinburne and a commercial software company have jointly ventured in developing software to crunch data from oil and gas borehole rigs. Data resulted from the oil rigs drilling processes has been collected in the past decade. This project focuses on working on a predictive model for more efficient drilling in future. In order to drill a borehole, driller (drilling company) has to balance time, cost, manpower and consumables in order to achieve adequate depth of drill with minimum time and resource. If time is too short, the drilling can be dangerous and more expensive. If time is too long, drilling can be less dangerous and in some cases more expensive or less expensive.

PhD candidate is required to design and implement a predictive model that can be used to estimate future drilling time and cost based on the ground parameters such as soil structure, depth etc.

Preferred candidate’s background:

• i. Students with a Bachelor / Master degree in Computer Science, IT, Software Engineering or relevant Engineering disciplines can apply. 
• ii. Strong programming skills (students with no programming experience would not be considered) 
• iii. Knowledge of Machine Learning, Data Mining and Statistical Inference would be an advantage
• iv. Knowledge of Oil Drilling would be an advantage

Project: Data Analysis Engine for Medical Discovery and Prevention

This project will address an area of growing need within medical prevention, especially in the area of cardiology where there is a significant growth in the number of members of the public with cardiac diseases, but their medical condition often remains undiagnosed until it is too late for any preventive steps (e.g., special diet, exercise) to be undertaken. Using the historical data of patients with cardiac diseases, the main aim of the project is to develop a tool-set, associate methods and models that will allow for the identification of better early indicators of cardiac disease risks. In terms of the core research, the objective of the project is to develop and validate a Domain Specific Visual Language (DSVL) that can act as a bridge between the mental model of a medical practitioner, the underlying meta-model mined from the data in the domain, and the data processing pipeline that needs to be executed.

Preferred candidate’s background: 

i. Students with a Bachelor / Master degree in Computer Science, IT, Software Engineering or relevant Engineering disciplines can apply.
ii. Strong programming skills (students with no programming experience would not be considered)
iii. Knowledge of Machine Learning, and Data Mining would be an advantage
