PhD offer Reliable transport of live multimedia traffic, Université Grenoble Alpes

This research focuses on reliable transport of live multimedia flows, mainly audio and video. You will work on characterizing different types of networks, and propose original solutions to provide high quality of service on top of these networks when using several paths simultaneously. The two main goals to achieve are low latency, since we focus on live communications, and high quality of service, to provide the best experience to the user.

Many new services are provided over the top, which means that no specific lower layers services are provided by the network operators to build upon. Your goal will be to study, propose and implement a new transport protocol to reach the goal of high quality live multimedia communications using conventional Internet access. You will conduct research to study three different topics: (i) multi-path transport, (ii) reliable transport, using various strategies like retransmission, interleaving, coding, and (iii) dynamic adaptation. We expect thorough study with analytical and experimental approaches, with effective simulation and implementation results.

High quality prototype implementation is of prime importance and is an expected outcome of your work. You will interact with engineers developing professional hardware and software products for multimedia data transmission. They will provide all the necessary support to conduct real world experimentations to validate your results with practical use cases.

Skills & Expertise

Applicants for this position must have an MSc or equivalent at the time they start in the position. We are looking for excellent candidates with the following:
  • Master degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications or equivalent
  • Strong motivation to conduct high quality research in a challenging environment
  • Excellent programming skills and good software development practices
  • Knowledge in network and kernel programming is a real plus
  • Excellent English speaking and writing skills are mandatory
  • Basic French skills are required, but this position is an opportunity to learn and improve

Project Description

Centre for Resilient Networks and Applications (CRNA) at Simula focuses on robustness and security of ICT infrastructures. This implies research on networks and applications with the aim of making them resilient with respect to failures and changing environment. The Networks department works on resilience in communication networks and applications from a measurement perspective, through prototyping and through theoretical studies.

We are looking for a PhD student to join our team of senior and junior researchers in the Networks department of the CRNA. The successful candidate will be part of a national project called DOMINOS that aims to investigate, monitor, and improve the resiliency and robustness of the Internet infrastructure in particular and communication networks in general. The project also intends to explore interdependencies between communication networks and other infrastructures like the power grid. We will follow an empirical measurement-driven approach that involves using existing publicly available data sets as well as designing novel measurement tools and techniques.


Responsibilities

The successful candidate is expected to:

  • Investigate the resiliency of and the interdependencies in the global routing system
  • Contribute to devising inference schemes to identify interdependencies between networks
  • Collaborate with the project manager and external collaborators on building a framework for assessing and improving network observability
  • Supervise and cooperate with master students

The duration of doctoral fellowship will be 3 years, starting as soon as possible. All PhD students at Simula will be enrolled as PhD students at the University of Oslo Mathematics and Natural Sceince Faculty.
Your Profile

Project Description
The Media Department of the Centre for Resilient Networks and Applications (CRNA) at Simula Research Laboratory has an opening for one full-time Postdoctoral Research Fellow, in the field of Computer Networking and Internet Technologies. The position is available for two years, starting from April 1st, 2016.

The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will closely interact with the CRNA teams working on low-latency networking for Internet applications, and on mobile broadband networks. The official working language in the Centre, and at Simula, is English.

This position is connected to the EU-funded research project NEAT (A New, Evolutive API and Transport Layer for the Internet), which started in March 1st, 2015. The NEAT project, coordinated by Simula, is carried out by a consortium of top industry players (Celerway, Cisco, EMC, Mozilla) and academic centres (Fachhochschule Münster, Karlstad University, University of Aberdeen, University of Oslo).

Research in the NEAT project tackles the problem of the ossification of the Internet protocol stack. The long-term goal of NEAT is to bring an architectural change to the Internet, by redesigning the way in which Internet applications interact with the network. This will be achieved by allowing network services offered to applications  such as reliability, low-delay communication or security  to be dynamically tailored on a best-effort basis, considering application demands, current network conditions, hardware capabilities or local policies; also, by supporting the integration of new network functionality in an evolutionary fashion, without applications having to be rewritten.

Responsibilities

The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will be part of a project team that works on designing, developing and testing novel transport-layer systems and mechanisms, as well as service-oriented APIs for Internet applications.The project also contributes to standardisation efforts such as the TAPS working group of the IETF. Research activities will be done in close collaboration with project partners, and will require a practical, hands-on approach to build real-world prototypes.
As a Post-doctoral fellow, the candidate is expected to collaborate with PhD students, and to supervise and collaborate with Master students. We provide the opportunity, as well as support, to apply for research funding or commercialisation funding, which could help establish follow-up projects. There are no requirements for teaching duties.

Your Profile

We are looking for outstanding candidates with:
  • A PhD degree (or very near completion of their PhD) on Computer Science or a related discipline.
  • A strong track record of scientific publications.
  • Extensive knowledge of data communication technologies. In particular, in-depth knowledge of Internet transport protocols and standards is mandatory.
  • Strong programming skills and proven experience with network programming. Kernel programming skills will be highly regarded. The main platform of development will be Linux, but knowledge of other operating systems, e.g., FreeBSD, is also beneficial.
  • The ability to both collaborate closely with others, and work independently on challenging problems.
  • Excellent communication skills in English, both written and verbal, due to the international and distributed nature of the project.

PhD student in SFB 901 On the fly computing 

Keywords: data centre networking, software defined networking, participatory systems, scheduling.
The collaborative research centre 901 ("Sonderforschungsbereich") considers the dynamic provisioning of both software and the its executing infrastructure upon request. You can find details on the SFB 901 webpage.

Our research group, more specifically, considers questions in the context of data center networking, the execution of complex applications in data centre (an example could be map/reduce-style jobs), and the participation of these applications in the decision making process. Our goal is to extend today's common data centre architectures by interfaces for applications to announce their needs, according scheduling algorithms that make use of such knowledge, and to build proof of concept realizations of these concepts.

A solid understanding of IT systems aspects (cloud computing like OpenStack, data centre, software defined networks) as well as some algorithm background (mostly, scheduling theory) are helpful here. You should be familiar with Linux system-level programming.

PhD student on anticipatory systems  

Keywords: anticipatory networking, video streaming, wireless communication, network function virtualization, scheduling

The idea of anticipatory systems describes systems that have a limited understanding of the future: their own state, likely user behavior, changes in capacity of wireless links, etc. A typical example is anticipatory video streaming: assuming some rough understanding of future data rates (available e.g. from mobility patterns or the knowledge that the user currently sits in a train), video segments can be intelligently pre-fetched to avoid playout interruptions. This is, however, only a single example scenario.

The goal of this PhD thesis is to dig into the idea of anticipatory networking, how it can be applied to different scenarios - wireless systems are one obvious example, network function virtualization another one - and how a coherent architecture to support anticipation can be designed. This includes questions like how to gather information to base anticipation upon, how to assess limited accuracy in such anticipation models, how a framework for such decisions should look like, and characterizing the benefits of anticipation decisions in various scenarios.

For this thesis, a solid understanding of networking in particular and IT systems design in general is required. Moreover, statistical methods will likely play a significant role; you should hence be familiar at least with basic stochastics. Machine learning might be a relevant technique here and knowledge here might be useful as well.

As this is a position with teaching obligations, you should either have or are willing & able to acquire quickly a decent working knowledge of German.

Requirements for PhD positions

To apply for a PhD position in the Computer Networks group, you should meet the following requirements:
  • Typically, you have a Master degree from a research-oriented Master's degree program; typically in computer science, computer engineering or related subject (e.g., electrical engineering with a communications focus, applied mathematics). Alternative degrees might be acceptable but need to be discussed in detail.
  • You should have very good communication skills.
    • You should be able to read, write, and speak English fluently in everyday and technical discussions. You should also have very good technical writing skills in English.
    • Knowledge of German is appreciated but not initially required; we recommend that you pick up at least a bit of working knowledge of German during the first year (useful for everyday life). For positions with teaching duties, a good proficiency in German is required in a reasonable amount of time.
