Two PhD Fellowships in Magmatic-Hydrothermal Ore formation


ETH Zurich’s Fluids and Mineral Deposits Group is expecting support from the Swiss National Science Foundation for two 3-year PhD positions. One of the projects will re-assess the vein and alteration sequence in several porphyry copper deposits, combined with microanalytical studies of fluid inclusions, stable isotope compositions of minerals, and quantitative numerical modeling of fluid processes and mineral precipitation in cooperation with a recently appointed postdoctoral researcher. The second project will investigate the hydrothermal history of linked porphyry-type and high-sulfidation epithermal copper ores of Bor in Serbia, to clarify the current debate about magmatic vapor transport in subvolcanic ore systems, in collaboration with local geoscientists and ETH’s volcanology group.

Essential requirement for selection is a top-quality MSc or equivalent 4-5 year degree in geological sciences and a good university background in quantitative science (maths, physics, chemistry). For both projects, a keen interest in geological field observation and careful petrographic study is essential. We expect that you want to learn combining observation with advanced analytical methods in the lab and/or acquire rigorous skills in quantitative computer modeling as part of your research project.

  • a master's degree in informatics, computer science, information systems (or an equivalent university study) for the PhD student position and a PhD degree for the postdoc position.

  • an interest in applying computer science research to real-world problems
  • excellent command of English; German is a plus but not required

The Macromolecular Chemistry Group (Prof. Nico Bruns) invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher (m/f) for a project on self-healing polymer membranes. In particular, you will investigate polymer networks as self-sealing layer on waterproof and breathable membranes. The study will involve the development of new monomer formulations to coat membranes in close collaboration with several industrial partners.
You should hold a PhD degree in Chemistry and ideally be a polymer chemist with a strong background and experimental expertise in polymer synthesis, polymer processing, polymer characterization and testing of materials’ properties. You should be interested in driving a collaborative project between academia and industry forward. Good English language skills (written and oral) and an excellent track record of publications in peer-reviewed high quality journals are required.
We offer an interdisciplinary research environment at the interface of materials science, polymer chemistry and bionanotechnology, well-equipped laboratories, excellent working conditions and a competitive salary. PhD in Plant Pathology in the Plant Pathology group at the ETH Zurich

A PhD position is available in the Plant Pathology group at the ETH Zurich. The candidate will develop a research project to evaluate the molecular mechanisms controlling the effect of multi-infections on disease development in plants and pathogen evolution.
 

Summary of project

Natural infections are often caused by mixtures of genetically different pathogen strains (multi-infection). The consequences of simultaneous infection by multiple pathogen strains on disease development, epidemiology and pathogen evolution remain largely unexplored. This research project aims to understand the consequences of multi-infections on disease outcome and pathogen evolution.
 
Zymoseptoria tritici (also called Mycosphaerella graminicola) is a major fungal pathogen of wheat that commonly exhibits multi-infection in nature. Extensive knowledge of Z. tritici population genetics and genomics, transcriptomics and infection processes already exist, and advanced quantitative measures of virulence based on digital image analysis have already been developed. Hence Z. tritici provides a powerful model system for studying the consequences of multi-infections.
 
This research project has three main objectives:

1- Determine the effect of multi-infections on disease development and epidemiology.
2- Characterize how growth patterns in planta are affected in multi-infections compared to mono-infections.
3- Characterize the molecular mechanisms underlying strain interactions in multi-infections.

Requirements: We seek highly motivated individuals interested in host-parasite interactions. Experience in molecular biology, confocal microscopy and bioinformatics is preferred, but not required. Requirements include a BSc or MSc in plant science, microbiology or plant pathology and good spoken and written English.
 
Group: The Professorship of Plant Pathology conducts research related to the molecular biology, population genomics and evolutionary ecology of plant pathogens. It is embedded within the Institute of Integrative Biology at the ETH Zurich, which possesses advanced research infrastructure including the Genetic Diversity Center and the Functional Genomics Center.

PhD Position in the Field of Paleo-Ice Sheet Modelling, Laboratory of Hydraulics, Hydrology and Glaciology (VAW)

PhD Position in the Field of Paleo-Ice Sheet Modelling


We are looking for a candidate who is interested in taking part in the research project "Modelling the ice flow in the western Alps during the last glacial cycle" which is a joint initiative between ETH Zurich and the University of Bern (Prof. Christoph Raible and Dr. Juan Jose Gomez-Navarro). The objective is to better understand the chronology of the last glaciation over the Alps via a modelling approach. The core of this doctoral research will be to model the ice flow and the glacial extent in the western Alps during the last glacial cycle. For that purpose, the PhD student will set up and run the Parallel Ice Sheet Model (PISM) on the clusters of the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre. The crucial step in setting up in PISM will be to include high-resolution climate simulation results, which will be conducted at the University of Bern. The combination of the two state-of-the-art models (ice flow and climate) will give a new insight of the ice flow field prevailing in the western Alpine region during some periods of interest like the last glacial maximum (22000 BP) and an earlier period (65000 BP). The final goal of the PhD will be to compare the new model results to the geomorphological evidence left on the Swiss landscape during the last glacial cycle (e.g. moraines, erratic boulders) in collaboration with quaternary geologists of EHT Zurich. The PhD student will be supervised by Dr. Guillaume Jouvet and Prof. Martin Funk.

The ideal candidate has a master degree either in geophysics, earth sciences, physics, applied mathematics, computer science, or a related field, and a keen interest in modelling of geophysical processes. Previous experience in computer modelling and scientific programming languages (C/C++, Python, Matlab) is an asset. Good writing and communication skills as well as the motivation to fruitfully collaborate within an interdisciplinary framework are essential, in particular with our climate modelling partners at the University of Bern.
