PhD position in Paris Saclay Univ, Iterative and Expressive Querying for Big Data Series

PhD position in Paris Saclay Univ Title: Iterative and Expressive Querying for Big Data Series Research Areas: Data Management Systems/Databases, Interactive Visualization, Human-Computer Interaction Summary:

Domains such as astronomy, and genome sequencing, are currently collecting a staggering amount of data, a significant percentage of which is in the form of data series. To make sense of it, scientists need to interactively explore them, by formulating hypotheses and progressively refining them. Our goal is to add iterative and expressive query mechanisms to big data-series collections. We propose novel interaction and visualization techniques for data series exploration and analysis, and focus on their scalability to multi-terabyte data-series collections. To this end, the thesis will develop interactive tools that allow analysts to express vagueness in their queries and then refine them in an iterative manner. The thesis will also introduce techniques for visualizing high-cardinality query results. Existing data-series indexing algorithms will need to be revised to accommodate the above requirements. Requirements:

Masters (or equivalent) degree in databases/data management systems or related field, fluency in written and spoken English, solid programming skills. Any background in visualization and human-computer interaction or UI development experience is a plus. The candidate should be enthusiastic about research. Knowledge of French is not required. TOPIC. The most common approaches for object identification within satellite images are based on a pixel analysis, or image segmentation techniques, using expert information or GIS. Machine learning techniques have been successfully  used when the images are enriched with GIS (Huang et al., 1997).

This thesis considers a novel approach based on convolutional neural networks, enriched with structuring methods such as ontologies and constraints generation. Convolutional neural networks have brought a spark in the learning power of neural networks in the past five years, as a deep learning method for efficient classification using a substantial volume of data (1 million of images for thousand classes) (Krizhevsky et al., 2012). Their usage for remote sensing data seems obvious, even though novel to this date. In a context of remote sensing, the images are complex because they are produced by more and more refined spatial and spectral resolutions, and obtained using many complementary sensors.

This thesis has two main objectives:

•    To generate a set-based constraint model that will allow to reduce the search space to be explored (Gervet et Van Hentenryck, 2006). The resulting model will be used to adapt the core architecture of convolutional networks in order to take into account the specific constraints relative to satellite imaging: (i) multiple resolutions (spatial, spectral and temporal), (ii) multiple types of sensors (radar, lidar, optical), (iii) radiometric noises, (iv) high heterogeneity of the observed environment, (v) handling of shadows, clouds, reliefs. A particular attention will be given to the pre-processing that can improve the recognition and the concepts of sensitivity to noise within image used and the robustness of the convergence corresponding to the learning process.

•    To better understand the results by analyzing the mathematical and statistical properties of the parameters found. To do so, ontological models using set constraints will be developed to structure and try to explain the learning process. The idea is to enter the black box of the convolutional network, by seeking to extract its structure and the connections reached, once the learning process completed.
This work will benefit from numerous data, from different projects within the research centre ESPACE- DEV (Maison de la télédétection in Montpellier), applied to different fields such as evolution of land usage and monitoring of land degradation, or the detection of the palm trees in Brazil. A result of digitalization made by human experts can be used as learning basis. Finally, the developed algorithms will be implemented in an automatic processing chain (based on OTB and Python) in order to make available cartography from environmental areas through

PhD Student Position in Elastic Resource Allocation for Query Optimization IRIT Lab, France

PhD Student Position in Elastic Resource Allocation for Query Optimization

IRIT Lab. (https://www.irit.fr/) - Pyramid Team - Paul Sabatier University - Toulouse - France Supervisor’s Names : Abdelkader Hameurlain (hameurlain@irit.fr) and Shaoyi Yin (Shaoyi.yin@irit.fr).

Pyramid Team (Dynamic Query Optimization in Large-scale Distributed Environments ; https://www.irit.fr/-Equipe-PYRAMIDE-) is likely to get a PhD scholarship for 3 years (Doctoral School MITT, http://www.edmitt.ups-tlse.fr/).

Context

In parallel and distributed large-scale environments (Cluster, Grid, Cloud), the Pyramid team addresses the main problems of query processing and optimization, targeting large volumes of data distributed in large scale. To manage a huge amount of data there are two approaches : parallel database systems and cloud systems (e.g. Hadoop, MapReduce, Spark, HDFS). The parallel database systems have been an important success, both in research in the early 90s and now in industry. They have enabled many applications handling large data volumes to meet their requirements in terms of performance (e.g. Response Time) and resource availability. It is recognized that parallel database systems are very expensive and require having high level skills within the company to administer the systems and databases. As for cloud systems, they allow a company to reduce these costs in term of infrastructure either by purchasing a server comprised of low-cost commodity machines or by renting a service in pay-per-use. Public Clouds provide on demand resources and services with advantages of scalability and elasticity. However, elasticity paradigm raises a new challenge regarding the design of efficient and profitable resource allocation models.

PhD Subject : Elastic Resource Allocation for Query Optimization

The objective is to design and develop an elastic resource allocation model for query optimization. In fact, the allocated resources (on the provider side) should increase or decrease in accordance with the demand of services (on the tenants side), in order to maintain a QoS and to meet the SLAs (Service Level Agreement). The main criteria of QoS taken into account are the performance (e.g. query response time) and the availability of services (e.g. data availability). As for the SLA, a kind of provider-consumer contract, it specifies a set of constraints to meet and objectives to reach, in terms of performance or service availability. The main challenge is to find the best trade-off between the tenants’ satisfaction in terms of QoS and the providers gain in terms of profitable resource management.

Requirements :

Distributed and Parallel Systems, Database Systems, Query Processing and Optimization, Cost Models, Cloud Systems, Hadoop, MapReduce, Spark, Programming Languages (C, C++, Java, Python, ...).

The application should include following documents (PDF format, see : http://www.edmitt.ups-tlse.fr/).

1- CV mentioning all your degrees
2- Motivation letter from the applicant explaining his/her choice of the proposed thesis subject
3- Recommendation letters
4- Details of your grades since you started higher education with ranking.

Applications in digital form (pdf) should be sent to : hameurlain@irit.fr

Application Deadline : February 8th, 2016

Start Date : September 1st, 2016.

Remuneration : the PhD Scholarship is approximatively 1684 Euros (Gross).
Once the candidate is selected by Pyramid team, he/she will be auditioned by a committee.

Postdoctoral position : Camera Localization with large scale semantic object signatures, French Mapping Agency (IGN), France

MATIS laboratory  French Mapping Agency (IGN), France

Camera Localization with large scale semantic object signatures

CBIR, computer vision, feature extraction, visual landmarks, image based localization, scalability.

Context

This Postdoctoral position takes place within the scope of a large-scale European Project: Things2Do (call KET-ENIAC 2013-2). This project aims at building a design and development ecosystem to support the deployment of a new semiconductor technology: FDSOI. This technology allows to build computer chips with smaller transistor size and lower power consumption, enabling more powerful yet energy efficient wearable smart devices.

The French Mapping Agency (IGN) contributes to this project through two of its five research laboratory (MATIS and LOEMI labs) by developing a wearable demonstrator running on FDSOI, designed for image-based localization.

Wearable localization system like smartphones usually make use of GPS or radio signal to find a position that may not be very accurate in urban environment because of noise or signal masking. This project aims at providing an accurate positioning solution exploiting the image stream from a wearable device camera (smart glasses) matched against a precisely geolocalized large scale image database, acquired using a mobile mapping vehicle called Stereopolis and developed in the MATIS laboratory [3].

The images acquired by the wearable system can be registered by first matching visual relevant features between both data sets using a CBIR approach, and second by integrating these matches into a bundle adjustment process. The MATIS already has some experience and tools on the matching of visual landmarks (e.g. road markings and road signs) and on bundle adjustment for robust registration and reconstruction of 3D visual landmarks from multiple view imagery with sub-decimeter absolute accuracy [1] [2].

This postdoc position will focus on the CBIR part of the process. He (she) will follow previous research works aiming to create a geo localization system based on semantic analysis of an image and comparison with a geolocalized object dataset.
Starting from a preliminary approach based on the indexing of the signatures of already detected semantic objects (visual landmarks or others) within a large scale geolocalized object dataset, this postdoc will focus on:
  • the study and improvement of the descriptors which produce visual object signatures dedicated to image localization,
  • the study and structuring of the signatures to perform fast retrieval in a large dataset through the distributed computing infrastructure available in the project,
  • the management of several experiments to evaluate the proposal in realistic conditions, e.g. evaluating the impact of signature degradation (partial signature, false detections…), evaluating the relative importance of landmark categories used for pose estimation, assessment of the impact of landmark density per square kilometer in the dataset, etc.

The system will be used on a mobile and wearable image based localization system associated with a distributed computing infrastructure (“cloud”), but may also be used directly on the mobile device with a smaller dataset. With the support of a team of researchers involved in the project, this postdoc will be assisted by an engineer whose missions concern the development of visual landmark detection tools and the interaction with the distributed computing infrastructure.

Project description
Societal uses for the drilling of deep wells are abundant and have enormous impact on global economies; examples include the exploration of minerals, geothermal energy, oil and gas. The future sustainable harvesting of these resources requires the exploitation of difficult-to-access, unconventional reserves and is threatened by concerns on the environmental safety and high cost of drilling operations. To overcome these threats, there are strong needs for advanced tools for virtual drilling scenario testing and drilling automation and for multidisciplinary employees with adequate technical and transferable skills.

The HYDRA EID research and training program addresses both needs by founding an intersectoral doctoral school. The consortium represents top-level expertise in all scientific and engineering disciplines needed to take on the main challenges of HYDRA: multiphase flow dynamics, model reduction, control and mathematics. Moreover, the consortium houses expertise ranging from academic research & training (TU/e, the Netherlands, MINES ParisTech, France) and industrial R&D (Kelda, Norway) to industrial practice and training (MH Wirth, Norway, and the Well Academy, the Netherlands), therewith offering a broad spectrum of training.

The scientific objective of HYDRA is to develop a framework for multi-phase hydraulic modeling and model complexity reduction for drilling operations, delivered in software directly usable in industry. The resulting models uniquely combine high predictive capacity and low complexity enabling their usage in both virtual drilling scenario testing and drilling automation. The main training objective is to launch 3 doctoral students into future leading scientific positions with an intersectoral network to support them throughout their careers.
The envisioned results form the necessary basis for revolutionary advances in the (environmental) safety and cost-effectiveness of resource exploration in Europe and beyond and will provide the human capital base for sustaining such efforts beyond this program’s lifetime.
This project involves a combined academic and industrial consortium, with Kelda Drilling Controls (http://www.kelda.no/), Norway, as the main industrial participant. Other participants are MHWirth (http://mhwirth.com) and the Well Academy (www.thewellacademy.com) .This consortium promotes industrial adoption of the technologies developed within the project.

PhD Student Position in Elastic Resource Allocation for Query Optimization IRIT Lab.

PhD Student Position in Elastic Resource Allocation for Query Optimization IRIT Lab.

(http://www.irit.fr/) - Pyramid Team - Paul Sabatier University - Toulouse - France Supervisor Names: Abdelkader Hameurlain (hameurlain@irit.fr) and Shaoyi Yin (Shaoyi.yin@irit.fr).

Pyramid Team (Dynamic Query Optimization in Large-scale Distributed Environments; http://www.irit.fr/-Equipe-PYRAMIDE-) is likely to get a PhD scholarship for 3 years (Doctoral School MITT, http://www.edmitt.ups-tlse.fr/).

Scientific Context

PhD Subject: Elastic Resource Allocation for Query Optimization

The main challenge is to find the best trade-off between the tenantsâ satisfaction in terms of QoS and the providersâ gain in terms of profitable resource management.

Requirements:

Distributed and Parallel Systems, Database Systems, Query Processing and Optimization, Cost Models, Cloud Systems, Hadoop, MapReduce, Spark, Programming Languages (C, C++, Java, Python, ...).

The application should include following documents (PDF format, see: http://www.edmitt.ups-tlse.fr/).
