PHD POSITIONS IN PARALLELIZING COMPILERS FOR EXTREME SCALE HPC, Institute of Computer Science at the University of Innsbruck, Austria

The Institute of Computer Science at the University of Innsbruck, Austria seeks for excellent Phd students to carry out research in optimizing and parallelizing compilers for C++ applications on extreme scale Supercomputers.

Required profile:

You are enthusiastic about developing and investigating innovative research ideas and systems within the discipline of high performance and extreme scale parallel computing. You have a master’s or equivalent degree in computer science with excellent performance? You are a highly skilled C++ programmer? You have a strong background in compilers or runtime systems? You stand out from your peers because of strong commitment and independent work? You are team oriented and communicative?
Note that the working and study language as well as the entire Phd course and research programme is held in English only. There is no need to learn German for this position.

The offer:

The successful candidates will join as a fully funded Phd student a vibrant research team investigating novel compiler and runtime optimization techniques for parallel C++ programs to be executed on extreme scale supercomputers.

The research of this PhD position will be conducted as part of the the EU FETHPC project AllScale (www.allscale.eu) and the Insieme source-to-source research compiler (http://www.insieme-compiler.org). Thus candidates should have solid experience with compiler development.
Our Phd students are given the opportunity to program some of the fastest supercomputers in Europe and gain interdisciplinary expertise by participating in national and international (EU funded H2020) projects.

The University of Innsbruck (UIBK):

UIBK is a global Top-200 university with a long history in scientific computing. Parallel and distributed scientific computing are primary research areas at UIBK. Besides numerous funded research programs in the area of HPC, in 2010 an  international doctoral school in computational interdisciplinary modelling (FWF Austrian Science Fund – Doctoral Programme) has been established where highly qualified international PhD students are trained in modelling, simulation, numerical mathematics, and techniques for parallel and distributed computing. Apart from interdisciplinary, an innovative teaching concept combined with strong international networking are key to this program. UIBK has been involved in a substantial number of national and international parallel processing, Grid and Cloud computing projects including several FP5, FP6, FP7, and H2020 projects.

Numerous application development environments, programming paradigm and tools have been created by various groups at UIBK to simplify the effective use of multiprocessor and HPC architectures as the basis for the next generation of performance-oriented and energy-aware applications. Among others the tool set includes the Insieme compiler project (http://www.insieme-compiler.org/), which is a parallelising and optimising compiler for HPC.
