2016 Robert and Lisa Sainsbury Fellowships

The Robert and Lisa Sainsbury Fellowships, established in 2000 through generous funding from Lord Sainsbury of Turville, are designed to strengthen academic ties with Japanese studies programmes in the US, Canada, Asia and Europe. The Fellowships provide recipients with an opportunity to work in a scholarly environment conducive to completing a publication project.

The Institute is offering several Fellowships of either six months or one year, to scholars who have received a PhD in any area of Japanese culture, although preference will be given to applications focusing on the history of art, cultural heritage, archaeology or architecture.

The one-year Fellowship will commence in September 2016 and carries a value of £23,500.
For the six-month Fellowship, please state the preferred start date in your application. This may be subject to negotiation. The six-month Fellowship carries a value of £12,000.

The appointed fellows will be given shared office space in Norwich.

Previous Robert and Lisa Sainsbury fellows have contributed to the Third Thursday lectures at the Sainsbury Institute for the Study of Japanese Arts and Cultures. In London, they have contributed to the Japan Research Centre Seminar Series at SOAS. Fellows will also be encouraged to organise a workshop in Norwich towards the end of their stay.
Fellows are expected to live in Norwich during their appointment.

Taiwan International Graduate Program 2016, Taiwan

The Taiwan International Graduate Program is a Ph.D. program, started in 2002, by Academia Sinica, the foremost research institution of Taiwan. In cooperation with top universities in Taiwan, Academia Sinica offers advanced, inter-disciplinary Ph.D. Programs, in nine fields that span the natural and physical sciences, as well as computational linguistics. TIGP students will learn in all-English teaching and research environments, and enjoy access to world-class faculty and state-of-the-art research facilities at Academia Sinica and partner universities. The field of finance is changing rapidly, largely in response to regulations designed to protect market practitioners and to prevent financial crises. FINCAD has long believed that deep market knowledge, transparency and trustworthiness play a critical role in making financial markets safe for all participants.
In addition, FINCAD is keenly aware that the majority of practitioners in the capital markets industry are men, and that the trend to include more women in the industry is not as rapid as it should be.

For these reasons, FINCAD established the annual 

FINCAD Women in Finance Scholarship. The goal is to encourage and support outstanding women in the field of finance, particularly relating to the use of derivatives in capital markets and/or financial risk management, and give them an opportunity to cultivate their skills and knowledge.

The FINCAD Women in Finance Scholarship is an award of US$10,000 to support graduate-level studies.

Bocconi Graduate Scholarship for International Students, Italy

Bocconi University is committed to making higher education accessible to  our students from  all backgrounds worldwide. Università Bocconi offers need-based scholarships to international first year Bocconi Master of Science Program applicants for the 2016-2017 academic year. The awarding of the scholarship takes into consideration not only the economic conditions of the students but also their academic performances; applications required.

The Bocconi Scholarship for International Students includes a full tuition waiver, worth up to € 12,000 per year.

Applicants for the first 5 “international” sessions, who are neither a resident or citizen of Italy nor have earned an Italian Undergraduate degree in Italy or abroad,  will have the opportunity to apply for the Bocconi Scholarship for International Students by completing the online application; link found in the top right-hand corner of this page.  The scholarship application must be submitted online by the same deadline as the one for the online admission's application. Late applications or applications submitted for a later round will not be taken into consideration. Scholarships will be awarded by a Commission whose decision is unquestionable and final: no appeals will be considered.
Awardees will be informed of assignment shortly after admission in Bocconi; the assignment of an award will be noted in the Admission's Portal.

The evaluation will primarily be  based on the candidate’s need for aid, however, the candidates academic achievements will also be taken into consideration. The complete dossier provided to the Admissions office will be evaluated.

PhD Students for Zero Power Sensors, ETH Zürich

PhD Students for Zero Power Sensors

The objective of the project on carbon nanotube (CNT) sensors is the integration of CNTs in a ultra low-power sensor system for environmental monitoring. The research shall focus signal evaluation, signal processing and noise reduction of suspended single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) field effect transistor devices that exploit substantial changes in the electronic transport properties of the carbon nanotube manifested upon exposure to specific chemical analytes (e.g. NO2). Device fabrication and integration in sensor arrays, analog circuit design and concepts of multivariate data analysis are aspects of the research.

The objective of the project on thermoelectric (TE) devices is the integration of nanostructured TE materials for the generation of electric power from temperature differences around room temperature. Starting from conventional concepts of Peltier thermos couples, the project shall explore the potential of nanostructured materials w/r to large area integration and reproducible performance indicators. The combination of ultra low-power CNT sensors and new TE devices may yield zero power sensor systems, i.e. sensors, which harvest energy from the environment and do not need batteries or power supplies.

The research requires working in semiconductor clean rooms, e.g. in the Binning and Rohrer Nanotechnology Center (BRNC), a joint cleanroom of ETH Zurich and IBM Research. The PhD applicants shall have experience in semiconductor processing, circuit design and system integration. Additionally it is expected that the PhD student contributes to teaching, administrative and operational tasks of the Chair. The candidate holds a Diploma or Master of Science degree in electrical or mechanical engineering, physics or material science. She or he has substantial experience in micro or nanosystems, semiconductor process technology, circuit design and electrical / thermal characterization, based a student thesis in the field. The candidate’s scientific record demonstrates already excellence by a minimum of one first author journal publication or a conference contribution.

She or he should have very good English knowledge, experience in presenting scientific results and excellent communication skills. The candidate is a perfect team player and acts on her or his own initiative.

Fully Funded Scholarships for Afghan nationals at LUMS, Pakistan

The Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish the Afghanistan Scholarship Programme (ASP), which was announced by H.E. President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani during his visit to Islamabad in November last year. This is an exclusive scholarship for talented Afghan students to study at LUMS in its undergraduate and graduate programmes. The programme will be implemented by the HRD Division of Higher Education Commission, Islamabad in collaboration with Ministry of Foreign Affairs & LUMS.

Afghan students that are successfully admitted on merit will be funded through full scholarships throughout their study at LUMS.

The ASP is an exciting development that expands upon thousands of years of relationship between the two neighbours. While providing an opportunity to the best and brightest Afghan students to study at LUMS and build excellent leadership skills for future, it will allow LUMS students and faculty to benefit from the fresh and unique perspective that these students will bring and further promote goodwill and people to people contacts among the neighboring countries. Scholarships will be awarded to Business Administration and Science & Engineering degrees under the Suleman Dawood School of Business (SDSB) and Syed Babar Ali School of Science & Engineering (SBASSE) respectively; Bachelors and Masters Level.

All prospective students who are citizens of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan are urged to prepare for the international tests which are a pre-requisite for admission into LUMS. Undergraduate students are required to take the SAT I examination for the School of Business and both SAT I and SAT II/LUMS SBASSE Subject Test for admission into the Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering. At the graduate level, GMAT is required for business students and GRE for science and engineering students.

The scholarship will cover all expenses related to study at LUMS including tuition, boarding and lodging, study material and travel to LUMS. The government of Afghanistan has allocated a fund of USD 1 Million for this programme that will be complemented by an additional USD 2 Million announced by the Government of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, so more of the Afghan talent can benefit from this.

The programme will commence from the Academic year 2016/17.

The 2016 Garden Scholarship in Surgical Sciences distance learning programme, University of Edinburgh

The University of Edinburgh will offer one Master's scholarship for the MSc in Surgical Sciences distance learning Master's programme offered by the University.

The scholarship will have a total value of £1,000, which will be deducted from the annual tuition fee for the part-time programme of study. Successful candidates who receive the award in their second year of study can re-apply for a scholarship their third year of study.
