PhD position in Federated Database System/Data Mining


The Department of Computing Science at Umeå University, Sweden (http://www.cs.umu.se/english/), invites applications for a full-time PhD position. The successful candidate will join the recently funded project in Umeå University on academic federated database construction and cross-database analysis for research purposes of data from distributed databases. Topics considered as particularly relevant for this position are data integration, privacy preservation, ontology based knowledge mining, and large-scale data analysis.

Priority is given to applications before March 31, 2016, continue until the position is filled
The position is expected to start from June 1, 2016, or as otherwise agreed.


REQUIREMENTS


The general admission requirements for doctoral studies are an undergraduate degree and completed courses corresponding to at least 240 higher (ECTS) education credits, at least 60 of which were awarded in the second-cycle, or substantially equivalent knowledge otherwise acquired in Sweden or abroad.

To fulfill the specific entry requirements for doctoral studies in computing science the applicant is required to have completed courses at advanced level in computing science or another subject considered to be directly relevant for the specialization in question, equivalent to 60 ECTS credits.
In the selection of candidates particular emphasis will be put on the degree of experiences, skills and interests in the following areas:

  • Significant interests in database systems, especially on heterogeneous database integration and privacy preservation in federated databases
  • Programming proficiency in at least one object-oriented language and one script language (e.g., Java/Matlab/Python/Perl/C/C++)
  • Ability and experience of applying open source software (Apache Tomcat, MySql, Lucene, Spark etc.)
  • Good skills in both spoken and written English are a requirement for the position.

Other desirable qualifications are:

  • Experience of processing large data sets
  • Experience of web service deployment under Windows/Linux
  • Internal and international collaboration experience in academia/industry on database technology and privacy preservation or relevant disciplines
  • Publication on database system, privacy preservation, data mining or relevant disciplines Important personal abilities are coordination and organization skills as well as good communication skills.

The Long-Term Scholarships by Danish Government under the Cultural Agreements

The Danish Government Scholarships under the Cultural Agreements are aimed at highly qualified exchange students wishing to immerse themselves in studies of the Danish language and culture or other fields of study related to Denmark.

Scholarships are offered to exchange students from higher education institutions in the following countries:

  •     China
  •     Japan
  •     Israel
  •     Egypt
  •     Russia

Scholarships are only available to master’s and PhD-level students. However, bachelor's degree students wishing to study Danish language and literature can also apply if they have studied the Danish language for two years.

Please note that scholarships are only offered to students enrolled in full-degree studies at higher education institutions in the countries listed above.

PhD students must likewise be employed at, or affiliated with, higher education institutions in the above-mentioned countries.

This scholarship aims to support Malaysian Government's effort to attract, motivate and retain talented human capital from abroad.

Talented international students with excellent academic records and outstanding co-curricular backgrounds are welcomed to apply for this scholarship and further their studies in any selected and well-established Malaysian public and private universities.

This scholarship is divided into two (2) categories of study: Postgraduate and Post-doctoral Studies.

Eligibility


To be eligible for Malaysia International Scholarship (MIS), applicants must fit the following criteria:-
  1. Not be more than 40 years (Postgraduate) and 45 years (Post-doctoral) of age during application.
  2. Obtained a minimum of Second Class Upper (Honours) or a CGPA of 3.5/4.0 at Bachelor Degree Level for Masters Degree applicants and for PhD candidates must possess CGPA 3.5/4.0 or very good result at Masters degree level in a similar field of intended PhD study. In addition, for post-doctoral programme, the selection will be evaluated based on the number of books produced, refereed/non refereed journals, portfolio and patent copyright. The Post-Doctoral candidate must have excellent reputation in research and possesses knowledge related to the research to be carried out.
  3. Took one of the following English Language Proficiency Test not more than two years before the date of application. The list of tests and minimum scores required:
    1. IELTS Academic Test with a score of at least 6.5; or
    2. TOEFL paper-based test with a score of at least 580 or computer-based test with a score of at least 230 or internet-based test with a score at least 92.
  4. In excellent health condition and certified by a Certified Doctor/Medical Professional. The cost of medical examination is to be borne by the applicants.
  5. Wrote a proposal that is relevant to the field of studies.
  6. Has applied for and gained admission to postgraduate and post-doctoral studies in Malaysia (conditional letters of offer will be accepted at the time of application or has a confirmation of acceptance or affiliation with the Universities in Malaysia).

Conditions

  1. Scholarship holder must undertake full-time studies for postgraduate and post-doctoral studies at a campus of Malaysian Universities.It is the responsibility of the scholarship holders to confirm admission to the university.
  2. Scholarship holders must not change their programme during tenure of the scholarship except with written permission from their university and the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia.
  3. Scholarship holders must follow the approved programmes and abide by the university’s rules, regulations and codes of conduct.
  4. Any suspension from the university will result in immediate suspension of award. Monthly allowances are not payable during suspension, including suspension due to illness.
  5. It is the responsibility of successful candidates to apply for and meet the requirements for the issuing of an appropriate entry visa including medical examination. The offer of the scholarship does not guarantee the granting of a visa.
  6. Scholarship holders must maintain satisfactory progress and good standing as stipulated by their host university and degree programme, or the scholarship will be withdrawn.
  7. The scholarships are tenable in Malaysian universities and research must be carried out in Malaysia.
  8. Scholarship holders are not allowed to take any paid employment during their tenure unless with written approval from the host university.

At TU Dortmund University, we are exploring the use of modern hardware technologies, including multi-core processors, GPUs, and FPGAs, to accelerate database and Data Science tasks.  The DBIS Group is part of the Collaborative Research Center SFB 876 at TU Dortmund, a world-leading research effort in the Data Science field.

As a PhD student, you'd be part of that effort; you'd support our group in close collaborations with other groups in the department, but also with practitioners that need your help to handle vast amounts of data, e.g., from the LHC particle accelerator at CERN.

TU Dortmund University is among the largest and strongest universities in the metropolitan "Ruhr" area.  The Internet in Germany has its roots in the IT support center of our Computer Science department.

PhD Scholarship in real-time bidding, computational advertising, and big data analytics

The College of Engineering and Computer Science at Florida Atlantic University and the Bidtellect, a global leader in native advertising technologies and solutions, have recently teamed up to establish a "Bidtellect Laboratory" focusing on real-time bidding and computational advertising.

Applications are invited for two full-time PhD scholarships in real-time bidding, computational advertising, and big data analytics to start in August 2016 (or Spring 2017). The PhD positions are fully funded. Both students will work closely with the industry to design real-time bidding algorithms on commercial platforms which support billion level transactions on a daily basis.

Successful applicants should

  1. Have an undergraduate (honors) or master degree (preferred) in computer science or related field (preferably with good knowledge in data mining, machine learning, mathematical modeling, and statistics).
  2. Be familiar with big data analytics tools and platforms.
  3. possess solid programming skills in Java, C/C++, etc.

Two Postdoctoral research fellow positions at the University of Melbourne's Department of Computing & Information Systems

Join a world-class research group in one of two open postdoctoral research fellow positions at the University of Melbourne's Department of Computing & Information Systems, situated in one of the world's most liveable cities. Applications close end of February.

The first position is in adversarial machine learning. Little is known about how well state-of-the-art inference techniques fare when data is manipulated by a malicious adversary; this project aims to evaluate the robustness of broad classes of learners using tools from optimisation, and to explore consequences of robustness to computer security.
