PhD Position in Visible Light Communication and Sensing Systems, IMDEA

The Pervasive Wireless Systems Research Group led by Dr. Domenico Giustiniano invites applications for a PhDStudent position in the area of Visible Light Communication and Sensing Systems.

The uptake of visible light communication (VLC) is expected to accelerate the growth rate of the Internet of Things, with Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs)-based transceivers at the foundation of this innovation. The objective of this PhD position is to investigate novel system concepts and solutions for illumination, communication and sensing using LED luminaries in order to move from single-cell VLC cells to networked VLC systems and create edge-less experiences for the users. Sensing and location will be considered as fundamental inputs for the design space of stand-alone networked VLC systems with context information.

Requirements:
  • We expect an excellent degree in electrical engineering, telecommunication engineering or equivalent disciplines
  • Proficiency in English is mandatory
  • Solid background in wireless networks and embedded systems
  • Hands-on experience with experimental work
  • Preference will be given to candidate with knowledge of C/C++, Linux scripting, Linux kernel/drivers, and FPGA programming
The work will be conducted in a well-established research group at IMDEA that has a leadership role in the research and development of a general-purpose open source platform for research in visible light communication systems (openvlc.org).

The selected student will be supervised by Dr. Domenico Giustiniano.
